To create a cover design for an existing book or record which utilises something handmade and physical as the central component of the artwork.
To design a book cover for George Bataille’s classic, early twentieth century erotic novel ‘Story of the Eye’, taking inspiration from the visual comparison of an eye and egg - a motif which regularly recurs throughout the book. I decided to create a collage of pin-up women to showcase the sexual aspects of the book. which I then ‘censored’ the nudity from, using egg sweets and emptied egg shells with the evil eye drawn on, to suggest another recurring theme within the book, which is forbidden desire. The resulting collage created a pattern which almost abstracted the sexual aspects of the subject, and in turn mirrored the way the novel’s story unfolds.
